Glogster and Schooltube partner up

Nice move for both of them. Key paragraph from the press release:

The partnership allows the students and teachers using Glogster EDU �” now more than 450,000 around the world �” to share their Glogs using the popular SchoolTube sharing site, and also allows them to easily import multimedia elements found on the SchoolTube site into their Glogs. All student-created materials on SchoolTube must be approved by registered teachers, follow local school guidelines, and adhere to the company’s high standards.

So it provides them a moderated means of publication, and also a way for Teachers to browse for edu-safe glogs. Kudos all around. Hope more sites go this route. There’s so many great Web 2.0 tools that educators COULD be using, but because of red tape and policy issues, they’re unable to leverage them.

What would you pay for your name?

Hi. My name is Steve Dembo. If you do a Google search for “Dembo” I have four hits on the front page. Considering all the famous Dembo’s, that’s quite a mediocre feat! And that’s how I identified myself to most people for the first few decades of my life.

About five years ago, I registered the domain name Teach42.com. Since then, there are thousands of people who know me primarily by that name. It has become my brand, my online identity, my signature. People know that if they see Teach42 on a website, that’s me.

This is nothing unusual though. Anybody who registers for just about any website has some sort of alter-ego now. An alias that they use to refer to themselves. Use the same one often enough, and you become quite attached to it.

How disappointed would you be if you had visited Twitter, intending to register, only to find that YOUR username had already been taken? Somebody else was online and communicating under the name that you had dibs on. Deliberate or not is irrelevant. First come, first served.

This has led to hundreds of thousands of URL’s being snatched up and squatted on. The cost is so low that it’s easy to grab them, either to hang on to or to put up for sale/auction. Heck, for only 8 bucks, I can register any open domain I want. 8 bucks is nothing, right?

Well, mull this one over. Twitter accounts are free. And considering that Twitter is now one of the largest social networking sites on the internet, are names on Twitter as valuable as domain names? Some sites seem to think so. People are snagging up Twitter names and putting them up for sale. After all, there’s only a finite amount of ‘good’ ones, right?

Of course, why stop at Twitter? While it may be the flavor of the month, who knows what will be replacing it. With new sites being launched daily, perhaps the next big thing went public this morning. How can you ensure that you will be able to get in there and get that perfect username, the same one that you used everywhere else?

Sites like UsernameCheck.com provide lists of Web 2.0 and social sites, and will check your username against all of them, to let you see where it has been registered and where it as available still. You could easily use that to see where you haven’t registered yet and start chasing windmills, registering your username on every site out there. But more will be coming out tomorrow, and the day after that. Can anyone really keep up?

Which leads me to KnowEm.com. It’s similar to UserNameCheck, but with one small twist. They’ll check where you’ve registered … and for a small fee they’ll register you on the rest. Then, for $20 a month, they’ll keep registering you on any new sites that they add, an estimated 15-20 per week.

I puked a little when I read that at first. Really?? I’m going to pay more than I currently pay for Tivo to have somebody register my name at every site that gets released? But then I started thinking about how bummed I’d be if I didn’t have Teach42 registered on Twitter. Or on Flickr. Or anywhere else for that matter. It’s my own personal brand. It has led to my current job, speaking gigs around the country, and an audience that I’m eternally grateful for. Is that worth a few bucks per month? Well, I haven’t plugged in my PayPal account yet, but I no longer think it’s such a crazy idea.

And that’s for me on a personal level. From a business standpoint, I think it’s almost a no-brainer. Why wouldn’t you want to maintain a tight leash on your brand and online identity?

So the question is, just how valuable is your online name? Can you put a price on it? And how upset would you be if it wasn’t available? What, if anything, would you spend to ensure that you maintain control of it and to be 100% positive that you have it reserved for you when the next big thing hits?

Turning Twitter into the Daily Prophet

aidendancing2The other night I was scanning through tweets about Phish’s recent concert, and came across the tweet of a certain MusicLoverChick. The tweet was interesting, but what was even more interesting to me was the fact that the gramaphone in her profile pic MOVED. It was subtle, but every second or two, it just thumped a little. And yet, that little bit of motion BLEW ME AWAY. I have been so used to looking at Twitter images as static and motionless, that just the little bit of animation was enough to knock me off my rocker.

Of course, I simply HAD to know how it was done.

After a few searches, I found a couple of sites with decent directions. And it didn’t look that hard at all! Just take an animated GIF and upload it, right? Well, in reality it wasn’t QUITE so simple.

Here’s how I did it.
1) Get your footage. I decided to use a video and started off with a video of Aiden that I had recorded in Qik. Unfortunately, Qik’s download feature is broken right now, but there’s a hidden way to get access to those files still through the RSS feed. If you go to http://qik.com/USERNAME/latest-videos, you’ll get their RSS feed of videos WITH the download links available. Footage obtained.
2) Trim it down. I used QuickTime Pro. Popped open the video and trimmed it down to JUST the part I wanted. Or at least the part I THOUGHT I wanted at the time, but more on that later.
3) Export it as images. Using Quicktime Pro, one of your Export options is Movie to Image Sequence. Choose that and it’ll save your video clip frame by frame as jpg images. My 8 second clip resulted in a couple hundred images.
4) Crop and resize it. This part may be a bit tricky, and might be worth doing prior to step three if you have a video editor that’ll do it. Instead, I grabbed photoshop and created an action that cropped the image down to a square (centered) and then resized it down to 150×150. Then I used the Batch fucntion in Photoshop to resize the entire folder of images at once.
5) Create an Animated GIF from it. While there are dozens of programs that will create animated GIF’s, I took advantage of a free one for the mac: GifFun. All you do is drag in your folder of images, make a few tweaks and then click on Create GIF. One thing to keep in mind though is that you probably want it to have something like 3-5 microseconds between frames, and by default it is set at 20ms. Change that in the program options first, so when you bring in your images, they’ll all be at a nice 5 ms between frames. Then click on Loop Forever and Make GIF and away you go. I haven’t tried any of these yet, but here are 5 online tools for creating animated GIF’s.
6) Trim it down…. AGAIN. The resulting image will be opened in your browser. Just save the iamge to your computer for now. Once you do, check on the file size. Twitter won’t take anything over 700KB, but I found that I had better success in the final step with smaller file sizes. So try to keep it down to around 500kb or smaller. How do you do that? Two ways. In the options for the program, you can reduce the color palette or in GIFFun, click on Minimize Output. Not sure what that does, but it does shrink down the file. you can also remove unnecessary frames from the GIF. So in the eye example, I went from over 200 frames down to a paltry 89 frames. It’s a shorter animation, but the file size requires it. C’est la vie.
7) Upload it. Rinse, repeat. You’re now ready to upload it to Twitter, which unfortunately is the most complicated step in the whole process. First of all, Twitter is not supposed to support animated GIF’s. While that may be their official stance, the site DOES support it…. kinda. You’re able to upload GIF’s as an avatar pic. But animated GIF’s routinely fail. Seems like there’s some faulty code there, and the first 10 times or so that I tried to upload my animation, it failed. I tried in Firefox on the Mac and got the Fail Whale. I tried in Safari and got the same. I tried in Firefox for Windows and no dice. I tried in IE7 for Windows and nada. Then I tried in Opera for Windows……. and SUCCESS! My boy was on the screen bonking his head for all to see.

blinkingeyeSo what’s the moral of the story here? If you want to upload an animated GIF, you’re going to need to be patient, persistent and may need to try uploading it 30-40 times before it works. If it consistently fails, try tweaking it just a touch. Maybe shrinking it down a little, removing a few frames. And then keep trying to upload it. There’s no magic formula for this part. Just be persistent. When I tried to change it from Aiden bonking his head to my eye blinking, I failed about 40 times before I resized it, failed 10 more times before it finally went through.

One thing to note. Seems that Twitter isn’t happy with their inability to handle animated GIFs well. Supposedly, they won’t be accepting new ones anymore.

There is no plan to remove existing GIF images. You’ll still be able to use JPEG (image/jpeg and image/jpg) and PNG (image/png) images, but new GIF images will no longer be accepted. This code should be ready within the next week.

That was posted on the dev boards on January 29th. Seems they’re running a little bit behind schedule. Point is though, if you’re interested in having an animated avatar, I wouldn’t waste any time. Could be locked out any day now and then the only people who will have them are those that are grandfathered in.

I can’t help but think that as more and more people do this, Twitter is going to look more like the Daily Prophet from Harry Potter. I know some find it distracting, but I love seeing how people express themselves. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

It’s not an assignment, it’s a creative brief

One of the nuggets that stood out to me from PETE&C was a comment made during a presentation by the two EdTechInnovators, Ben Smith and Jared Mader (I listed Ben first because he was left off the poster at the conference). They were describing how technology can be seemless in the classroom, not something you teach, but something that just… is. And one thing that they mentioned (I think it was Ben), was that he doesn’t feel like he gives assignments anymore, he gives creative briefs.

For example, if the students are expected to learn about different types of waves, he wouldn’t ask them to write a report, or to create a powerpoint, or to make a collage. He would ask them to demonstrate their knowledge. If they chose to create a video podcast with original music and lyrics, then so be it. If fact, so much the better.

I love the idea. Make it clear what the goals are. Make it clear what you’ll be assessing them on. And then give them some freedom. I think they’d certainly appreciate having the freedom to do some self-expression, and who knows what they might learn in the process….. in addition to the actual curriculum they were supposed to learn. Bonus perk, you aren’t wasting extra in class time on this. It’s up to them.

One other example, so long as we’re on a musical kick. Check out this video Lisa Thumann shared on Twitter.

You may say, “But the video doesn’t truly demonstrate their knowledge! I mean, could a student really learn anything just from this YouTube video?” I’ll let the author of the video respond, by sharing a comment he left someone asking that very question on YouTube.

This video was a project to summarize trig formulas and to create a song parody. It’s not intended to be a a study guide.

Here’s a suggestion for doing well in trig. Read from your textbook; don’t go on youtube to get your answers.

A toad-ally incredible mashup!

I wish I had checked out Traci Blazosky’s blog before I saw her at PETE&C, because if I had I would have hopped at the chance to use her recent post in my presentation. She mashed up a blabberize, some images, a song, a voiceover and more to create a toad-ally incredible video demonstrating not only facts about frogs and tadpoles, but also how to tie different tools together to make a great video for students! Love the idea and the end result is just a treat to watch. I particularly enjoy the tadpole song!

ShoutEm is to Twitter as Ning is to Facebook

We’ve all known it was coming, it was just a matter of time. Well, it has finally arrived and I’m thrilled to say that it was worth the wait. ShoutEm is a create-your-own-Twitter platform that works just as easily as Ning does. All you need to do is sign up with the current invite code of “doneright“, and within minutes you’ll be creating your own version of Twitter, as customized as you want it to be. It took me about 10 minutes to create Tweach42, the microblogging community for Teach42 readers!

They have several basic skins to choose from, but if they don’t quite suit you, you can upload images and tweak the settings through their UI. Or if you want more advanced features, just create your own darn CSS, they fully support it. I can only imagine what people are going to come up with down the road. Features include the ability to allow or disable public profiles, anonymous shouts (tweets), control replies, pownce like file sharing features, and even the ability to keep your network private or approve registrations on an individual basis.

What does this mean? It means that we finally have the ability to create our own Twitters for niche purposes. Youth Voices doesn’t need to hack WordPress anymore to simulate Twitter. Teachers can use it for any classroom project, with full privacy or publicity as needed. I plan to use it for backchannels and as an example for how microblogs work in a less crazy setting than Twitter itself. The possibilities are pretty endless.

Mind you, this isn’t a replacement for Edmodo, a site I’m still a fan of. Edmodo is what Twitter would have looked like if it had been designed by educators for classroom purposes. This is for people who like the Twitter format already and just want their own custom version of it.

What is innovation? How Andy Carvin Hacked the Debate

This week many educators enjoyed the shared experience of watching the debate with a Twitter overlay. Most did it the old fashioned way, with the TV on and a laptop handy. No laptop? No problem. If you receive the Current channel, then you could watch Hack the Debate , which featured the debate with Tweets from the general public floating across the screen. As much as I enjoy snark from the Twitterverse, I prefer to know personally the people who are sniping at the candidates. So I switched over to CNN which featured their Dial Test technology, enabling viewers to see how a randomly selected group of 16 male and 16 female registered voters from Ohio feel about what each candidate is saying, in real time. I have to admit that I did find that fascinating.

I do wonder what a technology like that costs. Thousands? Tens of thousands? Hundreds? Honestly, I have no idea. However, I did find it interesting. Unfortunately, the sample size is far too small to get any sort of accurate barometer. Wouldn’t it be interesting to be able to replicate the same experiment for free, with a much larger sample size?

Well, that’s just what Andy Carvin did earlier this week. While watching Twitter, I kept seeing people throw in the hash tag #dialtest along with a name, grade and comment. Things like this “#dialtest *Obama 7.0* Like what he said re: bailout”. I did a few Google searches and came across this post of Andy’s on the NPR blog.

Basically he thought to himself, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could create our own Dial Test using free and accessible tools?” And lo and behold, he did. Take one tablespoon Plodt, mix it up with half a cup of Twitter, and then mix thoroughly, adding basic programming logic as needed. People were able to send out Tweets in a very specific format, Plodt would pick them up, and aggregate them all together on one graph. End result?

I’m pretty sure that I was only in Finland for four days. However, given the number of meaningful experiences that occurred during that time span, it seems hard to reconcile its brevity. That being said, I’m back on US soil again, have replaced jet lag with common, every day exhaustion, and am ready to share a bit of what I learned from the experience.

First of all, I do have to thank three groups. A huge thanks goes out to Nokia for hosting an event like this. It was creative, innovative, and a distinct pleasure to be a part of. I also need to thank WOM world. They truly did a phenomenal job of making sure everything ran like clockwork and that the attendees were treated like celebrities at every turn (more on that to come). Lastly, I want to thank the other invitees who attended the inaugural event. I learned quite a bit from the group to say the least, and much of it had nothing to do with cell phones. It was truly an honor to consider them peers.

Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get on with the good stuff.

That which rocked
I’m trying to by concise, something I’m not really good at. But I think I have to say that it was the people that made up the experience. The attendees were an eclectic, international group who each had something different to contribute. Very diverse perspectives in many ways, not so in others, but on the whole just hanging out with them was a learning experience in itself. There were plenty of Nokia employees around throughout the event, and I do have to admit that it was fascinating talking to them. It’s a massive company and there are so many different aspects of it. It was interesting hearing what each of them have been working on, and discussing what the implications could be for education. And of course, the people of Finland were incredibly gracious, with the exception of one drunken Finnish woman. Oh, how I would love to know what exactly she was screaming at Brian.

The conversations definitely rocked. That’s no different from any conference. However, these were intended to be a little more open, less constrained, and focused on asking “What could we do if…” There were some very creative ideas that arose from the conversations, and some that weren’t quite so. While at times we seemed to be spinning our wheels, on the whole I think there were some innovative subjects broached. I truly hope that Nokia learned something from the event, I know that I did.

The social events truly rocked. There were two fantastic dinners, with drinks and merriment aplenty. Between the stand up comedian one night and the brilliant guitar the second night, it was very clear that they wanted to ensure their visitors had a great time. And we did.

The last piece that gets thrown into the ‘rocked’ drawer is the amount of free time we had. I was truly worried that I wouldn’t have much time to experience Finnish culture and explore Helsinki. I was wrong. I had a very memorable walk with Mike and Jen with plenty of photos to be uploaded still. I experienced a true Finnish sauna, which involved getting to know far more of the group than I had anticipated. And that’s all I’ll say about that. A group of us visited the Kiasma, a modern art museum that had some rather evocative exhibits…. and some that weren’t. One exhibit in particular, The Trainee, I have to admit I did not get at all, until I encountered it again at the airport in Helsinki on the way home. They recreated the exact same installation and I have to admit it was much more intriguing than I my original opinion, which seems to be the museum’s motto, “I don’t get it.”

Meh
We were sent out the Nokia e71 prior to the conference to try out. I swapped my SIM card into there and used it for a couple of weeks leading into the workshops, but unfortunately it was the European version and I couldn’t get on with a 3G connection. Not a big deal, I figured that they did that so we could have high speed connections while in Europe. And one of the first things handed to us when we got to the hotel was a SIM card to use for the trip. That being said, this was a group of people that were accustomed to carrying multiple devices. And for the most part, the e71 wasn’t exactly the ideal all in one for this group (myself included). So there was a ton of sim-swapping going on, and to be honest I didn’t really see that many people use the e71 that much. Compounding this, was the minute the conference was over, we were required to turn in the SIM card. I’m a bit perplexed why they didn’t just have us return them before we left, or even mail them back. Most people I spoke to basically turned off the e71 when the SIM card was taken away, and went back to their regular device. If they really wanted us to make proper use of it, I’d think they’d want to either give us the version that we could use in our ‘homeland’, or at least provide us with a SIM to keep making use of it beyond the constraints of the event.

I know how much I hate when groups just go around the table and everybody shares who they are, what they do for a living and what their favorite shape of pasta is, this event really demonstrated why that’s so necessary. When we began collaborating, we didn’t know each other. In fact, by the time we had an idea who each other were, the first day was essentially through. Context is so valuable to conversations, and it would have been helpful to have had some when we began collaborating.

Third ‘meh’ for the event was a certain lack of communication. I never really knew what the goals were for the event. In fact, there were some very X-Files conspiracy theories floating around. One theory was that the event was actually more for internal purposes, to illuminate the rest of the company to the power and relevance of social media. Another was simply that it was good for marketing, because surely the bloggers would type up posts like this one. All buzz is good buzz, so sayeth the gods of social media.

Fail
This leads me to the stuff that I don’t think worked. Namely, the structure of the event. There were two days. One day was workshops, the second day was presentations. During the first day, we’d have a 10-20 minute introduction about a topic, and then about 40 minutes to discuss, brainstorm and share back with the group.

Side out rotate.

We were randomly put into groups, and often the specific direction that the groups discussed was determined by the age old system of whoever shouts out first and loudest. I don’t mind randomness though, in fact sometimes it’s kind of nice talking about a topic that is far away from your comfort zone. However, that being said, is 40 minutes really enough time to do a deep delve into any topic? I would say no. In fact, at least three times i felt like the conversation was just barely beginning to get rolling, when we realized we had to stop and start planning how to present our ‘findings’. I was mortified when people who were striking out in some different directions that were contrary to what the group had been talking about, got cut off because we simply didn’t have time to explore their ideas. Very disappointing.

Let’s face it. You handpick 35 early adopters, social media gurus, highly connected, bleeding edge leaders in the world of new technologies… You fly them out to Helsinki and put them up for several nights… You create a stimulating environment and host lavish meals and events for them… And then have them contribute for a grand total of 3 hours? (4 brainstorming sessions x 45 minutes each) What a waste… With the group of people in that room, I truly felt like we could have accomplished something, really delved deeply into some of the different topics, provided some new insight or innovative ideas, beyond off the cuff surface thinking. Instead, there were many people who’s ideas were never heard, which is horrifying considering the nature of the event.

Additionally, there was very little effort made to involve the outside community. We pushed quite a bit of information outwards, but short of a brief pseudo-integration with Second Life, there was no effort to bring anybody from the outside in. If we’re sharing the event with the outside world, why not take it the next step and invite them to participate and contribute? Heck, just putting up a Tweet or SMS wall that allowed people to interact with the attendees would have been welcome in my mind.

Along those lines, one of the biggest surprises to me was the distinct lack of backchannel. Backchannel’s are commonplace for most edtech conferences now, so I was very surprised that nobody expressed a desire to create a backchannel for the conference. Twitter kinda sorta served as an unofficial backchannel, but by the time most of discovered and connected to the other people there, the event was basically over. I think that would have been extremely helpful, particularly during the presentations of the second day.

Lessons Learned:
I guess this one should be obvious, but you get out of an experience what you put into it. I realized pretty quickly that education wasn’t going to be a focus, and didn’t really figure much into most of the topics we were discussing. I could have tried to force the groups along my preferred path, but I didn’t think that’d be constructive. Instead, I realized that we had a pretty eclectic group of people gathered, many of whom are currently making a career out of jobs that didn’t exist when we were growing up (sound familiar?). So with that in mind, I thought I’d do a little informal survey and see what people had to say about their education. I asked about 10 people or so some questions about their schooling and got some pretty fascinating answers. Videos to be edited and shared soon.

Another point that I think bears further exploration is the idea of fame in the 21st century. Every person at this event was famous… for 15 people (give or take a few thousand). Very well known, very well respected, among a very tiny community of people. I like to think that I’m pretty well known in the EdTech community. And yet, I guarantee you there was not one person there that knew who I was. And for the most part, I didn’t know anybody else there prior to being introduced to them. There were sites I knew and employers I recognized, but nobody was what I would consider a household name, even amongst the bloggerati. However, as I said, everybody there was famous.

It made for an interesting dynamic. Some were rather outspoken, others rather soft spoken. Clearly a few people felt intimidated and didn’t want to chime in despite efforts to draw them out. Others simply dominated the conversation. It truly did emphasize to me the opportunity that every person has to become famous nowadays. It doesn’t take much to become famous, simply persistence, courage and the confidence to put yourself on the line. That’s it. Ironically, expertise is optional.

The last point I’ll mention in closing is more of a question than anything else… Which is more important, diversity of ideals and interests, or diversity of cultures and personalities? We had plenty of the latter, and not as much of the former. As diverse a group as we had, we were remarkably homogeneous. More often than not, it’s the conflict of opinions that leads to new ideas. Innovation doesn’t occur in an environment where everybody agrees. And there was precious little disagreement during these sessions. If people disagreed, it would come out on Twitter later, rather than verbally much of the time. I suppose part of it could have been because of the limited time available, but I think it was actually more due to the fact that everybody there had similar characteristics when it came to technology.

Ok, one more point/rant and then I swear I’m closing off. Let me just say that after spending half a week with this hyper connected, social media obsessed group, I really wanted to throw my cell phone through a window by the end. Believe me, I’m still pro-twitter, pro-blogging, pro-sms, pro-cell phones in the classroom and all. But I was appalled at how many people simply were unable to UNPLUG even just for the duration of a meal. I vividly remember at one point looking around, and at a table for ten, six people were busy typing away on a total of 8 devices. We were flown halfway around the world, being put up in an incredible hotel, and had the opportunity to collaborate with some brilliant minds… and people couldn’t seem to break away from the network overlay. Believe me, I understand the desire to tweet everything that happens, and I’m hardly a model example for the manners textbook, but that was just too much… Cell phones and mobile technologies should augment communication, not replace it. I just kept flashing back to the presentation we had seen earlier in the day by Adam Greenfield. He showed an image of a woman walking through the mall talking on her cell phone, and pointed out that while physically she was there, mentally she was nowhere near that mall. Her mental space was a technology overlay completely separated from her physical space. For the most part, that’s what seemed to be happening quite often throughout the weekend.

I’m not advocating that we eliminate the technology, but I do think that this is even more of a reason to teach appropriate use during schools. After all, the flip side of appropriate use, is understanding when NOT to use it.

Welps, that’s enough of a rant for now. More to come. And while it may seem like a lot of moaning and whining, it truly was an incredible learning experience. I hope Nokia got as much out of it as I did!

Me and My Avatar

What does your avatar say about you? Do you secretly desire to be taller, thinner, or younger? Do you see yourself as a canine, a cartoon character, or a jedi knight? Do you feel a desire to change your race or gender? It’s not always clear exactly what our avatars say about ourselves, but clearly they do mean something. After all, consider how much time we spend customizing physical characteristics for entirely virtual identities. Considering how quick and easy it is to change them, it’s surprising how few people actually do. Regardless of what they say about ourselves, our avatars are certainly a statement that we make to the world.

With that being said, I put out a Tweet and Plurk asking people to share photos of themselves with their avatars. Here’s what people shared.
