Top 10 FREE Web 2.0 Sites for Educators: NECC Edition
I’ve had several requests via email for my Top 10 presentation from NECC, and realized that I should probably post it here. Of course, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing!
So here’s a link to the presentation slides, such as they are. Most of the presentation is live demonstrations, so they’re only of limited value by themselves.
Here’s a link to the ISTE broadcast of the session. Video looks and sounds great, but they didn’t record what I was doing on the screen until 20 minutes in.
Then there’s my own personal broadcast of it using Procaster and Livestream. It has what’s happening on my screen throughout the entire presentation. However, the camera angle isn’t exactly the most flattering one I could have chosen

I can’t hear the sound on either broadcast, is it just me? I must be doing something wrong. I have checked my volume and I have sound and I am not muted. Any other ideas?

I thought your top 10 list was very interesting but I feel that you left off your list a very good web 2.0 site in http://applebatch.com. Applebatch is a free teacher community website that is designed for teachers to come together and discuss certain topics while sharing resources and networking with other teachers. I think you should give this website a chance.

Thank you for a great morning yesterday! I learned a lot of new sites and ideas to incorporate into my teaching.
Ideas I have that (in my mind) would make your presentation OFF THE CHARTS GOOD is to:
1. Slow down the pace or cover less.
2. Require all audience members to bring a computer, or set up the presentation in a facility that had computers for all participants.
3. Bring some assistants to help us do what you are sharing.
4. Have 100% of your audience ready to do something with kids that incorporates technolgy the NEXT day they work with students!
Been teaching 11 years and only one time attended a school inservice where I actually learned and applied in the same day, walking away with a clasroom ready activity for the kids the next day. I don’t need to be told technology in the classroom is important- I’ve been there since I started teaching. I need a teacher who will spend time with me and trouble shoot with me to make it a reality for my kids. This would be an incredible use of my time.
In other words, you could show twenty different things to 400 people and wonder if they will use it. Or have 400 people have five great activities, lessons projects ready for their next day of teaching. 2000 activities is an incredible number!

Great message. These tools won’t take lots of time for teachers or students to learn and have tremendous flexibility of use. Led to lots of brainstorming in our subsequent department meeting. Looks like a few of us will have things going by the end of the week. I thought the pace was dead on, partly because of the planned break in the middle (thank you, PD Committee). One of the best inservices I’ve attended in fifteen years of teaching. Thanks!
