Your Digital Dossier
Andy Carvin shared this video via tweet that does in incredible job of summing up what the New Permanent Record is, in a much more succinct way than I’ve ever managed to.
As you watch this video, consider what these students will look like when they enter your classroom. Honestly, will they care one whit whether you put their first and last name on the same page as their photo? Will their parents insist that you keep their identity private… or will they insist that you exhibit their learning publicly?
Is your school prepared for students that will have a larger digital portfolio before they enter kindergarten, than most of us educators have as adults?

When John Palfrey started showing the video at the Public Media Conference this morning and the narrator of the video said the subject in question was named Andy, I suddenly felt hundreds of people turn their heads and stare at me.

It’s so true, my kid already has hundreds of photos of her spread across the Internet, cached and archived in Google, and stashed away on countless CD backups and old mini-dv tapes.
I think you may be pushing things a bit hard though Steve to drive home your point. You were a Kindergarten teacher, right? You of all people should know that students, especially elementary students, will always love to see their name in print, plastered to a smiley picture of themselves at the front of the their room/desk/locker. And yes, parents will continue to exercise their overprotective right to keep their children lives as private as possible.
Great video though, reminds me a bit of the Truman Show
