Wii gonna get Fit

17

I don’t post TOO much strictly personal stuff on here, but I think it may help me some to meet my goals. And the way I look at it, if there’s other people with similar goals, I could use all the support I can get from my Network!

SO, I don’t know whether anybody has noticed, but I’ve put on some weight over the last few years *cough cough* Maybe it’s not having to wander through the halls, maybe it’s not chasing around 20 little scamps… maybe it’s too many twinkies. Regardless, enough is enough. I’ve never been a thin person, but the weight thing has gotten out of control. Time to get it back under control. For the past couple weeks, I’ve been trying to eat better, which is a good thing. I’ve also started biking to work after dropping Lefty off at day care, which is a good thing (although it’s only 5 miles each way). However, the one piece that’s been hard to get in is a daily workout. I hate getting up early, and it’s just been tough to hop on the treadmill when there’s so many other fun ways to spend the evening.

To remedy this other piece of the puzzle, I decided to try out the Wii Fit. I don’t own a Wii, so I swapped my Xbox 360 with a friends Wii for two weeks. If I can work out with the Wii Fit for at least 30 minutes every single day for 14 days straight, then I”ll buy myself a Wii to go along with the Balance Board. If not, then the Balance Board goes up on eBay.

I know the Wii Fit isn’t the same thing as going to the gym. However, doing the Wii Fit for 14 days in a row is probably better for me than going to the gym once or twice a week. If the games and characters and such help me stay motivated and keep me involved, then I figure its worth the price of admission. And it has worked for at least a few people so far.

Today I did my first workout on the Wii. Some of the exercises (namely the balance ones) really didn’t feel like they were doing anything. Others just flat out embarrassed me. Did I really run a marathon 4 years ago???? I sure did. And now I’m getting winded while doing a few pushups with a virtual trainer! Oh how the mighty have fallen. But I can accept that. Because acknowledging the sorry state you’re in is one of the first steps on the road to recovery. And on the whole it was enjoyable. While I wouldn’t say it was the most strenuous workout I’ve ever done, I’m aiming for long term results.

I’m hoping that this is a winner. Heck, just admitting that I’m doing this publicly should help. After all, I don’t want to fail to follow through when I’ve just shouted that I’m doing it to the whole world.

So anybody else trying out this crazy fitness game? Who knows, maybe we’ll have to schedule and EduFit workout session at NECC. Or maybe I’ll have to give the ol’ NECC 5K another try. That’d be a nice goal. And there’s still plenty of time to try to get ready for that.

One step at a time though. One step at a time….

I received my WiiFit today, but haven’t had a chance to use it. Our teenage children are having a party tonight. I may jump down there early tomorrow morning to at least find my Wii fitness age and BMI (although, that could be depressing… not necessarily a good way to start the day).

Very good idea to post about it, even though it’s more personal: 1)I’m certain there will be an educational impact with WiiFit, and 2)posting will be your own journaled smart goals. :-)

Best of luck Steve!

I gained 12 pounds during the May my wife was pregnant. I more than tripled her gain that month. Too much Teacher Appreciation and retirement parties…and too much stress eating.

Keep after it.

After my second child was born last year I wanted to finally lose the weight from the pregnancies. My sister, mother, and I set up a google doc on which we each record our weight once a week and any exercise we do. I had considered joining Weight Watchers for the public weigh in each week, but this has worked just as well and costs me nothing.

Good luck!

Steve,
Welcome to not being 25 anymore! And welcome to not being in the classroom anymore. When I was still in the classroom, especially teaching 1st and 2nd grade, I was constantly on my feet. As I got a little older (just a little, mind you) and more sedentary, but still very busy, it takes a lot more effort to eat right and move more. I’ve always fluctuated with my weight. The next time you see me, I will be about 15 lbs lighter then the last time we saw each other.

I signed up at the local gym to work out with a personal trainer. I meet him 3 times a week and knowing that I am paying for it and have an appointment makes me do it. For the cardio, I download episodes of TV shows that I never saw before and watch on the machine.

Will this last forever? Of course not, nothing does. But it’s motivating to me right now and I feel good about myself and I feel energetic.

When I see you again, after this summer? Maybe at next year’s FETC, will I be another 15 lbs lighter? I hope so, but might I be back up 15 or 20 lbs? It’s possible. I’ve come to accept that sometimes I fail at things. But I can turn around and try again. :)

I think you have a healthy and positive attitude, as you do with everything! Best of luck. I’m all for a Twitter/Blog/DEN/etc. support group!

This is for you, Steve.

After bowling with a Wii at Christmas and then racing cows with a cousin in March, out daughter wants a Wii. My husband has scoffed for some time – then the Wii Fit comes out and now even he is interested in a Wii. We both bike, but I can only get so motivated to ride 20 or 30 miles when it is below even 50 degress. I’d rather ride with someone, but then who stays with the 8 year old? She is only so tolerant of long rides with us, and she can’t ride our speed. Gym? Yeah, 15 or 25 miles away, take your pick. Ride to work? Sure with a laptop, lunch, clothes. I tried do a workout with one of those big ball thingies, but felt kind of silly rolling around on a giant ball. Maybe, like you said, the characters and the “fun feel” of the Wii fit is the answer. Wish I knew someone who would let me borrow one for a few weeks. Maybe Santa will drop one off in our house (along with a Wii Fit for me, Hannah Montana for the daughter)

Steve,
Good for you…and good luck. I started spending as much time on my treadmill as I do on my laptop a few months ago. My laptop time has decreased drastically- LOL. Keep us posted on the progress:)

My mother and younger brother get to play Wii when I drive to Philly to visit. They saw commercials for Wii Fit and now they’re on the hunt for a Wii and Wii Fit of their own.
I’m on Day 2 with Wii Fit, and I like that in 20-30 minutes (time in the bank, not total time), I can feel exhausted and “worked out”.
Good luck!!

I just got my Wii Fit last night and I’ve already put 40 minutes into. I agree that the balance games don’t really feel like they are doing anything, but many of the strength training exercises certainly did! If you are interested in other technology to help you get fit, you might want to check out http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/ or http://caloriecount.about.com/. Both sites are free and allow you track what you eat and how much you exercise.

Steve, I wonder if you have any thoughts about how this Wii Fit could be combined with in-class work? You’ve seen the new brain research book talked about here and there in this sphere about how sedentary offices and classrooms are the worst learning habitats.

It makes me want to explore something like “LearnerCize” – and I have a copyright on that term ;-)

Seriously, I’d love to read your thoughts about how Wii could be combined with, for example, and interactive whiteboard to make learning and fitness synchronous, instead of the schooly asynchronized version.

Hello, I have been using the wii fit program for 25 days now, I am slowly losing weight but I am losing the inches off my waist, arms, thighs, and hips I am down one full size. I love working out everyday and it is a fun way. My husband also does the wii fit program and togehter we do wii sports and that also adds to workouts and fun for the both of us. I haven’t been able to knock down 99 pins yet in bowling but I am not giving up. Good luck to everyone and have fun.
