Now that the blog has been upgraded to the latest and greatest version of Wordpress, I’m trying out a few new looks for it. So if you only read the blog in your aggregator, do me a favor by clicking through and letting me know what you think.
Just about all of the themes that I’m using support Wordpress Widgets. I’m tired of modifying my sidebar whenever I want to try out a new widget, this will let me key in on specific blocks within it. It will also give me a lot more flexibility to bounce between 2 and 3 column layouts with ease.
Today’s theme is Durable WR, which is a widgets ready version of the award winning Durable theme. It features an extremely dynamic nav bar, and is 100% customizable by visitors. So if you don’t like the colors I’ve got on Teach42, you can go ahead and change them any way you want! It also displays the current blog post more prominently than older posts by having older posts split amongst two columns, and the current post spanning them. I think it’s pretty slick and may very well be a keeper. But I’ll definitely try a few others first.
Love to hear what you think.
Purple is my fault…I hang around middle school girls too much!
Steve,
I like to new theme, though if you can change the default, I might go for something a bit more subdued colorwise. So, will it remember my modifications to your appearance?
I really enjoy the site, I’ve been lurking pretty much since you came to Pittsburgh to give the talk at TRETC. Thanks for leading me to some cool stuff out there.

WOW! Don’t need my double espresso in the a.m. any more if I read your blog first! Wait a sec…..just went to grab my sunblock (SPF 45)! LOL Are you doing a theme-a-day? Once you try them all out on us, can you do screen shots of each, post to a blog post and we can tally votes from there?

Steve, I like the look and the column feature. The only issue I see is that there is too large a gap between the current post and previous posts. Tried it first in firefox and then IE and it is in both. Also. the light blue background and yellow text at the bottom of the page is a bit hard to read. Keep blogging and offering the latest and greatest. Much appreciated.

@Nancy - Heh, you got it! I’ll do something along those lines. And yeah, it’s just a little bright. VERY different than what I’ve had up there for the last year!
@Frank - Yeah, I noticed that after I wrote the post. Seems that the sidebar only applies to the first post, so the more you have in the sidebar, the farther down everything drifts. That’s why I took out most of the sidebar content, but even stripped down it keeps a huge gap. Thanks for the advice about the color scheme too. If I wind up keeping it, I’ll have to do some tweaking on the default colors.
You know, Steve, I like it. It’s cheerful and friendly (like you) and easy to read. I love the fact that you’re asking for feedback. The only thing I find disconcerting is the gap btween the new post and the older ones. Keep having fun with this.

Mine comments probably shouldn’t count toward anything because I use Google Reader. I like how clean it all looks. I don’t care for the large post area. I find it easier to read with a smaller column width. Not as small as the DEN blogs (too small) but something in between. You said you had other themes. What else do you have?

I’m an RSS reader, too, but if I weren’t, the gap would bug me, but the functionality and clarity of this design are pretty appealing. The default color scheme makes me think of Howard Johnson’s, which in turn makes me long for some mint chocolate chip ice cream. Sigh. ![]()
