I know edublogs just added a whole bunch of new themes to their cadre to choose from. Most of them now have very customizable widgets which I really liked, along with the ability to keep your header/logo. Other then that I can't really give much help other then fiddling till you find what you are looking for or what feels right. I know that's what I've done for my last 3 redo's.
