[...] Each Friday I like to highlight an interesting or resourceful post on the forum, to share with the wider community. Think of it as my way of saying “Thank You!” to the dozens of educators that find a little bit of time in their hectic schedules to share their thoughts and discoveries with a wider community. This week, I happened to share a brief e-mail conversation with Steve Dembo about the need for recognition, awards, and the occasional “ego-stroking”. Steve was pointing out yet another new blogging award web site, while I was questioning (a little bemoaningly) whether we needed another place to show off what we’re all doing on the web. The long and short of the matter is; yes, we do need a place and a little time for all of us to “show off.” Not necessarily all the time, but from time to time we do need to recognize achievements of our peers, and at times ourselves.

I won't attempt to deny or justify the ego stroking part of it :) That's just me. However, I do find that these awards to serve a purpose. How many of those blogs that have received votes are you familiar with? Personally, I haven't heard from the top 7 of them. So, they help expose you to blogs that may fall outside of your usual blogroll. To me, they're just another way to celebrate what we do.

And yet another "Blogging Award" contest is launched. I'm not sure about others out there in the blogging world, but I really hate to see blogging become more and more like "old media" every day. One of the reasons that blogging, social networking, and web 2.0 has taken if is because of the whole "every voice matters" ideology. The idea of awards and "best of" make me question why I bother blogging and reading others' blogs. One day, the "Best of the Blogosphere" could easily be the worst depending on many thousands of perspective and personal tastes.

Now don't get me wrong, I love validation and ego-stroking as much as the next person (I check my incoming links daily), but the more and more awards that I see, the more and more I see the blogging world turn into a model of the old hegemony. Or am I totally off base here?

That's just my little daily rant, sorry it turned up as a comment on your post Steve. :(
