Free your data and get DabbleDB for free

I’ve mentioned DabbleDB on many an occasion. I use it extensively at Discovery Education and it has proved itself invaluable again and again. In a nutshell, by using DabbleDB we’ve been able to take the data we’ve been collecting and actually get real world use out of it. Not only that, but it has allowed us to automate many tasks that were difficult and time consuming at best before.

The only complaint I had about it was that there was no free version. There was a 1 month free trial, but like many others I’m not a huge fan of trial memberships. However, last month they announced that so long as you’re willing to share, you can use DabbleDB for free. The only catch is, that the data you log is going to be open to the public under a creative commons license. So it’s still yours, but it’s open to the public.

For a few examples, check out Ismael Ghalimi’s Office 2.0 database, and the schedule for O’Reilly’s ETech conference. Pretty sweet stuff. I don’t know how most conferences are handling their registrations and room scheduling, but that stuff is just a natural in DabbleDB. No reason not to use it.

If you have any sort of a data set that can be shared publicly under Creative Commons, then you absolutely must check out DabbleDB. It is by far one of the most innovative and genuinely useful Web 2.0 sites.
