Researching a digital camera? Use Flickr!

File this under cool uses of new tech.

Whether you realize it or not, your digital camera snaps a whole lot more than just the photo. Most of you know that it also records the time and the date. However, many digital cameras also the settings that were used to snap the photo as well as what type of camera took the photo. It’s all there in the meta data. I’ve seen it appear in Flickr, but I never really thought much about it.

Well, Flickr is making great use of that info now. If you go to the Flickr Camera page, you can see some interesting charts about how many photos have been taken with each brand and model of camera. Drill down and you can see other stats that basically let you know how popular different cameras are and such. You can even then view scads of photos that were taken by that specific camera!

If you’re thinking about buying a digital camera soon, it’s a great place to stop by and check out actual pictures taken by a model you’re considering. That way you can see the quality of the photos in the real world! You can even filter down to night photos, macro photos, landscapes and so on. These are all photos taken with the same digital camera I use. Pretty darn cool…
