It is exactly this approach which burns people out on technology (or at least tech pundits) and makes people feel like technology is changing even faster than it is.
Interesting. Is technology changing as fast as it feels like it is? Seems like every time I turn around there’s a new tool that I’ve missed. Or a new beta operating system being run on a hand held that doubles as a dishwasher. And yet, as fast as technology is changing, when I walk down the street things look pretty much the same way they did ten years ago. There’s just more coffee shops. Schools certainly haven’t changed that much. Seems to me like what we’ve got is a million ‘proof of concepts’. Yes, things could be incredibly different. Yes, we have tools that can really revolutionize things. And yet, for the most part very little has really changed. I order my photos through Flickr now, instead of getting them from Walgreens. However, they’re still just as disorganized and I still keep saying that I’m going to put them in proper albums one of these days. No real change there. So is technology really changing that quickly? Maybe not. But I think part of that is because as a society we’re largely resistent to change. Oh yeah, and it takes time and money to institute any major changes. Can’t forget those two. Personally, I hope things don’t slow down. I like being bombarded by a consistent stream of new tools and information!
