If you’re sick of hearing me go on about the new job, then just skip this post. I just can’t seem to help it though, it’s all so new and incredibly exciting. There’s just so many good things in the works and of course I want to share it all!
I’m sitting here in San Diego and watching Hall Davidson speak to a group of administrators and teachers about digital storytelling. I never did a ton of that when I was teaching, but I never get tired of hearing people talking about it because it’s such exciting stuff. Today’s event is highlighting some of the new features of unitedstreaming, introducing the DEN to people and sharing some of success stories from districts using digital media in the classroom.
So I’m sitting here listening to Hall, soaking in some new information, and when a strange though occurred to me. What’s Discovery’s angle here? Are they trying to sell these people some software? No, each of these people have already bought into the product. Maybe sell them some professional development packages? No, because product development offers webinars and trainings for free already. So what’s the catch?
To be honest, I’m not really sure! I mean, sure we want to recruit new people into the DEN, but that’s sort of a side goal. Really, the event was all about showing the people in attendance some of the new features they might not know about and how they can use it in the classroom. It’s about making sure that they get their money’s worth out of a product they’ve already bought into. Most importantly, it’s about sharing some new ideas that will hopefully improve the quality of education that teachers can provide to their students.
I’m used to seeing presentations/seminars like this from companies trying to sell new packages to schools. We’re doing the opposite here. We’ve already sold it, we want to make sure schools are getting the maximum value from their investment.
Typical corporations just don’t work this way. I’m having way too much fun. Can’t believe that this is considered ‘work’. Don’t tell my boss that though, sssshhhh….!
