Doug Kaye thinks like me (or the other way around)
Doug Kaye, the mad genius behind IT Conversations, has recently shared with the world his next big idea.
Every day there are scores or even hundreds of fascinating and important conference sessions, lectures or other presentations that are lost. They simply evaporate because no one captures or records them. Some of these presentations are by the greatest and most inspiring minds of our time, and many could be important to people in the far reaches of the planet, if only they could hear them.
My new project is to capture (record) all of these presentations, post-produce them, and make them available worldwide for free.
To record tens of thousands of events each year, we will appeal to the social conscience of the worldwide army of podcasters – 10,000 today, and 25,000-50,000 within a year – who I believe will be enthusiastic about the opportunity to give back to their communities and to the world. As a side benefit, these “podcaster stringers” will hone and extend their skills and build their reputations in ways that could benefit them financially and otherwise.
Amen brother. You’ve got a choir member right here ready to devote some time and energy to the project.
This is what got me into podcasting to begin with. Let’s not be satisfied with the status quo for conferences. It’s time to take advantage of the tools we have freely available to us and take it to the next level. We need to be archiving, republishing, and aggregating our information instead of letting it just slip off into the far corners of cyberspace.

Doug also had a point about getting the appropriate rights. In the ITC – Announcement (July 10th) he was commenting about how to be sure the person that was saying it was okay to record this – is the person who has the authority to say it is okay. I wish I had a good answer for him on that one.
He also mentioned that he wasn’t limiting the content to audio, he mentioned doing video ‘when the time is right’. I get the feeling people have less of an issue with audio recording than video.
Very cool project.
