Podcasting in Chicago
Couple of interesting podcast items from the Chicago front. First of all, the local chapter of NBC is now producing three podcasts daily, one about the news, one about health and one about entertainment. They claim that they are the “first major market TV station in the country to offer daily podcasts.” For all I know, that’s true enough. Regardless, the legitimacy of the medium simply cannot be denied.
Also from Chicago, there’s DJ that has been on the radio for 25 years now. His name is Steve Dahl and I used to listen to him quite a bit. To be honest, I never really liked him all that much, but if I wasn’t in the mood for sports radio, or in the mood for NPR, then he was my only choice for talk radio. Since I began listening to podcasts, I have stopped listening to the Dahl show. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy his style, it was mostly because the show was so full of ads and ‘extras’ that it seemed he was barely on the radio. If I had known he was releasing his shows via podcast, I would have jumped all over it because I could listen to what I want and fast forward through the ‘other stuff’.
Anyway, unfortunately, he has had to stop rebroadcasting his shows via podcast.
“Although it seems like it would be simply time-shifted streaming, podcasting is not currently considered “streaming” and is not covered under Infinity ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC licenses or under the statutory streaming license. As a performer who enjoys getting royalties himself, I can’t really argue with that, as it turns out.”
It’s too bad, but I do understand it. I keep thinking that Howard Stern would be a perfect person for podcasting, but he’s also a shrewd businessman and there would be quite a bit of legal issues to deal with.
One great quote from the end of Steve Dahl’s explanation. “And remember: The pioneers get the arrows and the settlers get the land. You’d think I’d get that right after all of these years.” I have to remember that one! Great phrase.
One last thing. If you want to read any interesting discussion of vodcasting as well as podcasting. Check out Alan’s post called The Emperor’s New VidCast. I wrote a few blog entries in the comments section.
I really do tend to ramble on, don’t I?
