At least a few of you reading this blog are tech coordniators. That means that amongst your many other hats, you probably manage your school’s email server. How many times have you had someone call you up because their email is bouncing and when you check it out, you find then have 5000+ messages in their inbox? Usually those people have subscribed to a mailing list or two that simply floods their account with messages. People don’t want to unsubscribe because there could be some valuable information, but without a good set of rules/filters a listserve can easily take over a mailbox.
What we need is an elegant solution to allow you to participate in a a listserv through an aggregator like Bloglines. That’s where Geoff Harder comes in. He has posted up a set of instructions for subscribing to an email list (listserv) using Bloglines. If you subscribe to any mailing lists at all, I highly suggest you check this one out. I plan to do the same. You can already subscribe to public Yahoo Groups in Bloglines, with this addition I can take care of all my email subscriptions.
If you work with Macintosh computers or servers, I reccomend you head over to Apple’s mailing list site. In particular, I’ve gotten quite a bit of solid information from the Client Management list, Macos-x-server list and System-imaging list. They’re all fairly active and have an incredibly dedicated user base.
FYI, based on the comments in Geoff’s post, this system doesn’t work for every mailing list. So your mileage may vary I guess.
