Geeking out in the library

add

Coming to you via the Shifted Librarian, Frank McPherson did something very cool and very geeky today in the library. You can read more on his site, but basically he used his Pocket PC to access the libraries Wifi and look up the online card catalogue. The reality is, more and more people are walking around with wireless access to the internet in their pockets. I love hte idea of using it to find your book on the fly without even needing to scribble down the dewey decimal number.

So where is this going? Picture this one. The next time you’re in Borders, you take out your cameraphone and scan in your barcode (a la [ur=http://www.delicious-monster.com/]Delicious Library[/url or Semacode) and use it to check to see if your local library has it on the shelf (a la Jon Udell’s bookmarklet). You skip the checkout line, stop by the library on your way home, and go straight to the shelf thanks to the fact that you already have the location on your phone.

Of course, this assumes you don’t just download it straight to your PDA and start reading it right there in Borders :)
