iPod and Linux??
Wow. It’s a really interesting experience being unplugged for a full week. I reccomend the experience for everyone, just to remember how life used to be and to keep in mind that you can still lead a rich and enjoyable life without keyboards and cell phones. Seriously though, i feel very ‘out of it’. There’s hundreds of blog posts for me to catch up on, and I did record a podcast during my trip that I need to clean up and post. I got some nice feedback about my podcasts while I was gone so I’m pretty pumped up about it all right now. Don’t worry, this blog isn’t going to turn into a podcasting only site, but it’s a new technology and there’s a lot going on in the field.
This is such a cool hack. Appearantly the iPod used to ship with a defunct version of linux on them, and a group has been working actively to improve it to a working version of linux for it. The iPodLinux Project has instructions for putting Linux on your 1g, 2g or 3g iPod (sorry, 4g’s are out of luck right now), and has a bunch of software/games for it as well. It’s still a VERY rough beta and the actual music playback capabilities are a tad flaky, but it provides one feature which I am WAY excited about. Currently, the iPod only lets you record voice in at 8khz. With iPodLinux, you can record at rates all the way up to 96khz!! Yes, that’s right, 96khz. I’ve loaded linux on my ipod, and plan to try recording out later today, probably on my way home from work
For those of you who are podcasters and actually HAVE an iPod, this really makes recording directly onto it feasible to do with quality.
One last thing. Dennis A Amith posted a list of recent articles aobut podcasting to the Yahoo Podcasting group. Enjoy!
