Spreading the word
It’s been a busy weekend! I really don’t have much time to post right now if I want to eat lunch today (which I do), but I had a quick meeting today with our librarians, Rena and Fredrica, and got them started on Furl and Bloglines. I’m very excited about this because Rena is the one who meets with Middle School students and teaches them about research, citations, copyright and so on. She’s an integral part of how the students learn to do research. She’s planning on integrating furl into the mix, which will be pretty darn neat for a number of reasons.
1) Students will be able to keep track of the sites they flag from both home and school easily.
2) They can share their resources with each other if they happen to be researching similar topics.
3) Their teachers can subscribe to their furls to see their sources AS they do their research instead of just at the end. This should also cut down on the plagarism factor.
4) Students using furl can see other people who have archived the same sites, and possibly find other avenues of research that they might not have found in a search engine.
5) It’s one more way to get both teachers and students on the Blog/RSS/Podcast train!
I have a ton to blog about though and I really want to get another podcast off. Maybe afterschool I’ll squeeze a few in before leaving.
- Podcast 8: Now I’m Free… Free-Furling
- Seriously though, who has time to web surf?
- Too many bookmarklets? Combine some!
- The Internet is NOT an excuse for allowing students to cheat.
