Behold, Podcasting!

add

Muahaha, it works! I can now officially say that I am a podcaster. Hmmm, how long do you think it will be before Think Geek has t-shirts that say “Don’t piss me off or you’ll wind up in my Podcast”? Or something equally geeky like that.

Ok, back on topic. I have now posted my first official podcast! You can get rss feed by clicking on the “Podcast” logo in the upper left corner of the page, or byclicking here for the extremely lazy. If you want to listen to the direct feed, you can grab it from here. I had some serious issues last night that I need to work on though. For one, every time I tried to export it using audicity, the program would crash. Not too much fun. Then when I tried to do the same thing via iTunes, if I didn’t export it to MP3 on 192kbps, it would sound awful (well more awful than I normally sound anyway). So consequently the file is WAY too large. 22MB for a little over 15 minutes. That’s way bloated. So I need to smooth out the process to shrink down the file size for one thing. Then I ran into issues figuring out how to create the RSS feed. pMachine didn’t seem to have an easy way to add enclosures to a feed, and the only way I could see was to caluclate out the time myself and just insert it the old fashioned way. No fun in that though. However, this morning I discovered Dircaster, which users PHP to automatically generate your feed when you drop an MP3 in a specified directory. VERY cool. However, it apperantly didn’t play well with all the various sites to publish podcasts, so I now have it running through feedburner as well.

So for now, the actual podcasts are residing on my hacked together server behind my TV at home. I’m not sure how many people at once it will handle, nor am I sure that anyone besides my wife will listen to it! However, if so many people want to listen to my melodius ranting that my server goes into crisis mode, that would be a wonderful problem to have and I’ll seek out alternative hosting or move to a Bittorrent feed.

Too much traffic. That would be a great thing to worry about :) Anyway, for now I’m proud of my accomplishment. Now I’m off to add it to the various Podcasting networks!
